Surprise Engagement - Japanese Tea Garden - San Francisco | Flo Signorelli Photography

I was on Thumbtack searching if there was any publication that would match my conditions (normally it is in the Bay Area and there’s a few facts that you have to look into before applying; let’s do this tip for another blog). I found out Mattew wanted to surprise his fiancee on the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco ans that was just one day away.

I was more than excited to be part of this! I was always applying to others for this type of shoot, but sometimes the time or the place was an issue or they wanted this to be done for just $40, true story.

We ended up deciding the place with the bonsais would be the best location. She thought they were going to be having dinner inside the Japanese Tea Garden, but sometimes when you are not expecting the surprise you don't even remember that the name of the place is “Tea Garden”. If you haven’t been there, they only serve tea, and some nut pastries.

I waited for like 40 min in front of the big Buddha. People started getting suspicious. I tried to keep my nerves, but it wasn't working, I arrived 20 minutes early...

He texted me they were getting in. I saw him and she was looking towards where there was no restaurant. He then gave me his phone and told me “Can you take us a picture?” And I told them, “the best place is down there by the bonsais” ;).

We went to the bonsais and put them where I wanted them to be and took the picture with the phone. She looked into the pond giving us her back, he kneeled on one leg, took the ring out and I started shooting.

She couldn't believe what was happening. After saying ‘Yes’ she never noticed I was still there shooting; she even thought that I was there taking pictures randomly...until he told her that it had all been planned!

We ended up having a wonderful mini session and I was so glad she picked that red dress that matches with the location not knowing she was going to be photographed.

At the end, when the golden hour was making an entrance, they asked me ‘Can we do some more candid/silly pictures? Thats how we are...’. I can guarantee you they were fun, silly, friends, easy going and in love.

Congratulations Matthew and Tilly!
