What to wear for family fall photo sessions.

This is a frequent question that I get and this year I am working on a Wardrobe guide that would give you inspiration, some links for brands and different styles to perfectly fit your family.

But with mini sessions starting I thought to give you a few tips ( and links ) that I believe , working with families for years now that would look amazing in your pictures.

Let's start with the DO’S

You can use COLORS that complement one another rather than match entirely. Soft neutrals like fawn brown, baby blue, blush pink & cream are a good color palette to begin working with.

Let's say that you want your session to go with some warmer mood, you should pick colors like peach, cream, or brown, that would produce a more glowing effect.

Almost all this looks are from Old navy , this is a great alternative if you are more casual and you dont want to expend that much. Another great pro on this brand is that you can literally arrange the whole family at once, they normally use the same shades of colors and patterns, so maybe if you dont like that skirt, theres the same patter for your daughter as a shirt.

ADD VARIETY WITH SUBTLE PATTERNS.

To add depth and interest to your photos, create dimension by having primarily solids with a few coordinating subtle patterns and textures. Patterns are great in small doses and add a lot of your photo. Avoid bold, large prints that can distract from the photo though. You want your family photos to be about you.

A pleasing pattern with neutrals can look quite effective. Just make sure that only 1-2 people wear a pattern as too much can detract from them in the photos

In this case I tried to look for a pattern that it look beautiful but not steal the show either, like I said before, a pleasing pattern.

This looks are a little more expensive but they are for a more formal session too.

Let’s finish with the DON’TS.

Don't use matching outfits! The reason for this is that anyone wearing the same color is going to blend into each other, and are not able to see where one person ends and the next starts.

The solution of this is to wear the same color and pick different shades of the same one so you can notice everyone

Here's an example of different shades of the same color.

Avoid clothes that don't fit well.

Short dresses, skirts and shirts are always uncomfortable because you are probably going to walk, throw your kids into the air, lift your arms or sit and I don't want you to feel like you are showing too much or seeing you struggling to fix your dress every 5 minutes.

Try all the clothes at home before the session and feel comfortable to get out to your family photo session and be free to play with your kids.

Hope all this information works as the inspiration and help that you needed, and remember that this is just a recommendation, you don't need to buy any new clothes or wear something that you don't like, these are some tips that I found myself knowing after several years of sessions!
